What is Postinor 2

Postinor 2 is not a regular method of contraception but it is an emergency pill when use within 72 hours it can prevent unwanted pregnancy after unprotected intercourse. It contain Levonorgestrel.

Levonorgestrel is an hormonal medication which is used in a number of birth control methods. It is combined with an estrogen to make combination birth control pills. As an emergency birth control, sold under the brand name Plan B among others, it is useful within 72 hours.

Description

Each tablet of postinor 2 contains 0.75 mg levonorgestrel.
Inactive Ingredients: Colloidal silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, potato starch, talc, maize starch, lactose.

Uses of Postinor 2

The uses of Postinor-2 as an emergency contraceptive is recommended in the following cases:

  • If no regular method contraceptive measure of any kind was taken during intercourse
  • If the applied contraceptive measure cannot be considered reliable, i.e. tear or slip inappropriate use of condom
  • Disposition or tear or premature removal of diaphragm or pessary
  • Unsuccessfully interrupted coitus
  • Erroneous calculation of fertile days in case of periodic abstinence
  • In case of IUD loss or removal
  • Omitting the ingestion of 3 or more hormonal contraceptive tablets to be taken regularly
  • After rape or incest

Direction for use

A card of postinor 2 contains two tablets. One tablet should be ingested within 72 hours following intercourse and another one 12 hours after taking the first tablet.
Checking the data of clinical studies, it is advisable to take the first tablet within 48 hours (but not later than 72 hours) after intercourse, since the efficacy of the preparation decreases if more than 48 hours elapse between intercourse and drug ingestion.

It may be used at any time within the menstrual cycle. If spewing occurs within 2 hours after drug intake, the dose must be repeated.
Not more than 4 tablets may be taken per month.

Contraindication

Before taking Postinor 2 inform your doctor early if you have the following problems;

  • Breast Cancer
  • Liver Problem
  • Existing Pregnancy
  • Vaginal Bleeding of unknown origin
  • Unprotected intercourse more that 72 hours in the same menstrual circle
  • History of gestational jaundice,

Effects of Postinor 2 On The Womb

The womb also known as uterus sits quite low in the abdomen and is held in position by muscles, ligaments and fibrous tissues. The womb is joined to the vagina by the cervix that is also called the neck of the womb and it is where a baby is carried during pregnancy. The effect of postinor 2 on the womb is when it is too much it will weaken the wall of the womb and damage the uterus. This will cause miscarriages in the future.

Pregnancy

The effects of postinor 2 on the womb can affect an existing pregnancy and it may lead to ectopic pregnancy. In that case before taking the treatment pregnancy test or pelvic examination should be carried out when pregnancy is suspected.
It should be administered after careful consideration of the risk/benefit ratio (unwanted pregnancy/abortion).

Lactation

Breastfeeding mothers are not advice to take postinor 2 since it can be identified in the breast milk and it can affect breastfeeding baby.
