STOMACH ULCER: IBUPROFEN AND FELVIN CAN CAUSE ULCERS, BEWARE!!

Peptic or stomach ulcers are open sores or wounds that develop on the lining of stomach and small intestine.

There are different types of ulcers but the most common include; gastric ulcer which occurs on the lining of the stomach (stomach ulcer) and duodenal ulcer which occurs on the lining of the small intestine (duodenum).

Normally, stomach acids help us in food digestion but can also result in peptic ulcer when the mucous layer that lines the stomach or the small intestine has been removed.

This mucous layer protects the stomach and duodenum from attack by stomach acid, so any substance that can decrease the layer of mucous or increase the concentration of stomach acid will cause ulcer. One of such drugs is ibuprofen.

Causes of Peptic or Stomach Ulcers

Do you know that Ibuprofen and felvin can cause stomach ulcers? Before I tell you how these two drugs can cause stomach ulcers, let me define peptic ulcers.

Generally, the most common cause of ulcer is; the long-term use of certain painkillers, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, felvin and naproxen sodium. Most people (especially ladies) use these drugs for menstrual cramps and osteoarthritis.

These drugs belong to a group of drugs called Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) capable of causing irritation to the lining of the stomach and small intestine resulting in ulcer.

Also, infection with the bacterium, Helicobacter pylori can cause ulcer. This bacterium lives in the mucous layer that lines the stomach and intestinal wall but can cause inflammation of the stomach or intestinal inner layer if the population of the bacterium is altered, thus resulting in ulcer.

Note: stress and spicy foods can only worsen the symptoms but do not cause peptic ulcers. They are regarded as risk factors. Other risk factors that can increase the severity or worsen ulcer condition include drinking alcohol and smoking.

The most common symptom of a peptic ulcer is severe and burning stomach pains.

Other symptoms include heartburn, nausea, bloating or belching and fatty food intolerance.

Complications such as internal bleeding, obstruction of digestive tract and peritonitis (serious infection of the abdominal cavity) may result if peptic ulcers are left untreated.
